A Thousand Reasons
A poem about the thousand reasons life gives you to give up, and the courage to give tomorrow one more chance.
Unfortunately, life will give you a thousand reasons to give up,a thousand reasons to lay your dreams to rest,to bury your hopes beneath the weight of yesterday, and convince yourself that some thingswere never meant to be yours.
It will give you a thousand reasonsto believe that love is a beautiful lie, that promises are merely wordswaiting for the right moment to be broken, and that forever is nothing morethan a sweet illusionwe entertain to make goodbye hurt a little less.
And perhaps, after enough disappointments, you’ll begin to wonder why you should bother.
Why plant flowerswhen winter will eventually come? Why open your heartwhen people have a habit of leaving? Why build castles out of dreamswhen life has shown youhow easily beautiful things can crumble?
And I understand.
I understand how easily a wounded heartcan mistake pessimism for wisdom, how disappointment can dress itself as experience, until expecting the worstbegins to feel like the safest way to live.
But I hope you never become so afraidof watching beautiful things come to an endthat you deny yourselfthe pleasure of watching them begin.
I hope you never let the memory of a stormconvince you that every cloudhas come to steal your sunshine.
Or allow the flowers that withered in your handsto persuade youthat nothing beautifulwill ever grow there again.
Because perhaps nothing lasts forever, but must something be eternalto have been worth experiencing?
Does a sunset lose its beautybecause the night eventually comes?Does a flower bloom in vainsimply because its petalswere never promised eternity?
And what a tragedy it would beto spend your entire lifemourning endings that haven’t happened, burying dreams that haven’t been born, and saying goodbye to beautiful thingsyou haven’t even had the chance to meet.
So when life gives youa thousand reasons to stop trying,I hope you find the courageto give tomorrow one more chance.
Not because love will never hurt,or because every dream will come true,or because everything beautifulis destined to stay.
But because the possibility of heartbreakshould never become a life sentencethat forbids your heart from loving.
And I hope you rememberthat yesterday’s disappointmentsare not prophecies of tomorrow.
That the things which never worked outare not proofthat nothing ever will.
For life may give youa thousand reasons to surrender, but I hope you never hand your futureover to the fears of your past.
Because what could be more heartbreakingthan reaching the end of your lifeonly to realizethat you had spent so much timeafraid of living, you never truly lived at all?
