The Language of Faith
A spoken word prayer for the seasons when faith feels like a language you are forgetting how to speak.
Listen to the reading
I have a confession to make.I don’t know how to believe anymore.
Faith used to be a language I spoke so fluently.I knew its alphabet by heart.I could conjugate hope in the past, the present, and the future.I knew how to speak of mountains moving, of seas parting, of impossibilities bowing at the mention of His name.
But these days, faith feels like an ancient language I can no longer understand.I recognize the words, but somehow, I’ve forgotten their meaning. The prayers that once rolled off my tongue now get tangled in my throat. And the promises I used to recite with so much conviction now sound like sentences I’ve memorized but forgotten how to believe.
And I don’t know when it happened.I don’t know when my I believe became I hope. When my I know You will became I wonder if You will. When the faith that once moved mountains became too weary to climb even the smallest hill.
But here I am, God.With a Bible full of promises and a heart full of questions.Trying to reconcile the God I know You are with the life I cannot seem to understand.
And I wish I could tell You that I still believe with the same certainty I once carried. That my prayers still sound like declarations instead of desperate negotiations. That I never question whether You are listening when the heavens seem so painfully silent. But that wouldn’t be true.
Because sometimes, I read the stories of the people You delivered, and I wonder how many nights they spent crying before the morning finally came. How many prayers went unanswered before the miracle arrived. And whether they, too, ever found themselves struggling to believe in the very God they had spent their lives proclaiming.
And maybe that’s the part I’m most afraid to admit. That I still know all the right things to say.I know the Scriptures.I know the promises.I know the testimonies. But knowing the language and being able to speak it are two different things.
And lately, God, all I seem to have left are broken sentences.Half-finished prayers.Questions I am too afraid to ask.And silences so long they have begun to sound like a language of their own.
But perhaps You understand that language too.Perhaps You hear what my trembling lips cannot find the courage to say.Perhaps faith was never about speaking without hesitation, but about still turning toward You when I can barely find the words.
So here I am, God.I don’t have a beautiful prayer.I don’t have a mountain-moving declaration.Just a heart trying to remember the language it once spoke so effortlessly.
And if all I can manage tonight is a whispered help my unbelief,I hope You know I’m still talking to You.
