The Beautiful Art of Being Delusional

A spoken word piece about why you need a little delusion to chase a dream that does not look good on paper.

3 min aloud

I think you need to be delusional.

And I knowthat sounds a little crazy.

But hear me out.

Sometimes, rationality can become a prison. We count the odds so many timesthat we stop believing in thingsthat refuse to look good on paper.

We become so goodat calculating the risksthat we forget to calculatethe cost of never trying. We call it being realistic.

But tell me,

how realistic is itto spend your entire lifedreaming of a worldyou never give yourselfthe courage to explore?

How reasonable is itto keep your dreams lockedwithin the four corners of your room, then wonder why your lifenever seems to go anywhere?

You see,

I think the problemwith being too realisticis that realityhas a way of reminding usof everything that is,

while imaginationdares to whisperof everything that could be.

And isn’t thathow everything beautiful begins?

Before an airplaneever kissed the clouds, someone had to believethat human beingswere not condemnedto spend eternity on the ground.

And before a dreamever became someone’s reality,it had to survivebeing called impossible.

So perhapsa little delusionisn’t such a terrible thing.

Perhaps there is something beautifulabout believing in a tomorrowthat has given youabsolutely no evidenceof its arrival.

And please,

don’t misunderstand me.

I’m not sayingyou should abandon reasonor pretend that wishingis the same thing as working.

Dreams don’t grow legssimply because we believethey can walk.

But I think

a little bit of delusionis a superpower you should never give up on.

Because sometimes, the difference betweenthe person who lives their dreamand the person who spends a lifetimedreaming of itis that one of themwas willing to look delusionallong enoughto find out what was possible.

And I wonder, how many dreamshave been buriedin the graveyard of common sensebefore they ever hadthe chance to breathe?

So dream.

Dream ridiculously.

Dream beyond the bordersof everything you have known.

Let your imaginationwander into roomsyour feet have yet to enter.

Believe that the lifeyou’ve been longing formight still be waitingon the other sideof a decisionyou’ve been too afraid to make.

And when the worldcalls you delusional, perhaps you can smile.

Not because every dreamis guaranteed to come true. But because you understandthat the futurehas never belonged exclusivelyto those who could predict it.

Sometimes,it belongs to thosewho dared to imagine it differently.

So yes,

I think you needto be a little delusional.

Delusional about life.Delusional about love.Delusional about your dreams.Delusional about anythingyou believe is worth dreaming about.
