The Chain
A spoken word piece about the elephant who outgrew its chain, and the fears we keep holding long after they stop holding us.
Listen to the reading
Have you ever heardthe story of the elephant?
They say when it was little, they tied a chain around its leg.And every day,it pulled.
It pulled until its skin ached. It pulled until the dust beneath its feetbecame a map of everywhereit could not go.
But the chain wouldn’t break.
So it tried again. And again.Until one day,it stopped.
Not because it had stopped wanting freedom, but because it had started believingfreedom was impossible.
And then the years passed.
The little elephant grewbiggerand biggerand bigger.
Its legs became pillars. Its body became a mountain. It grew strong enoughto uproot the very treethat once held its chain.
But still,it stood there.
Because the elephant had grown. The chain had not.And somehowthe memory of being powerlesshad become more powerfulthan all the strength it now possessed.
And I wonder, how many of usare just like that elephant?
How many times have we called ourselves incapablewhen what we really meant was“I tried once, and it hurt”?
How often do we let yesterdaywrite the rules for tomorrow?
One door closes, and we stop knocking. One dream falls apart, and we stop dreaming. One person leaves, and we start believingeveryone will.
We take a moment of failureand stretch ituntil it looks like a lifetime.
And without realizing it,we become prisonersof our own pessimistic minds.
Not because every chain is imaginary. Some wounds are real. Some doors really were locked. Some losses really did change us.
But we are changing too.
We are no longer the small, frightened versions of ourselveswho first learned what it felt liketo fail.
We have grownin ways we haven’t even noticed.
And maybe the chainyou still believe you cannot breakis not as strongas the person you’ve become.
So I hope one dayyou’ll stop asking the pastfor permission to try again.
Because failing onceis not a prophecy. And the fact that you couldn’t thendoesn’t mean you can’t now.
What a tragedy it would beto live your whole lifeinside a prisonyou have already outgrown.
So tell me:What if the chainisn’t holding you anymore?
What if you’re the onestill holding on to it?
And what if,just this once, you pulled?
